In the Garden

Install timers on outdoor sprinklers to prevent excessive water usage. It’s even better to schedule the sessions for the early morning or the evening when the sunlight is less intense and water won’t evaporate as quickly.
Fight the urge to water your lawn regularly, especially during a drought. Don’t worry if it begins to brown, it will turn green again when a normal rain pattern resumes.
Start a compost pile in your garden instead of tossing food scraps in the trash. This morning’s coffee grounds are tomorrow’s nutrient-rich fertilizer!
Share the fruits of your labor. Give out the vegetables and flowers that grew so well because of your fertilized soil. This encourages others to start their own compost piles and organic gardens.

Simple Green

AT HOME

Place a bucket in the shower or tub while waiting for water to get warm before you suds up. Gallons of water are wasted as you wait, so save it and reuse it for things like watering plants or rinsing dishes. Shaving minutes off your shower time also helps.
Avoid using harsh insecticides to kill bugs. Try using cayenne pepper or lemon juice if you have an ant problem – ants taste with their feet!
Make good use of a sunny day and line-dry your laundry. Clothes dryers are one of the most energy inefficient household appliances.
Purchase reusable cloth shopping bags to use at the grocery store. If you have mountains of plastic bags, use them until they wear out and then recycle them.
Are you diligent about drinking water everyday but always reach for a new bottle from the refrigerator? Make sure to recycle disposable ones after they’ve been used, and opt for a reusable bottle instead.
Be sure to run your dishwasher only when it’s full. Running several smaller loads instead of a full load wastes both water and energy.

There are more advantages to taking your foot off the pedal than just cutting the risk of getting a speeding ticket. Driving slower on the freeway saves gas, meaning you save money and produce less smog – so slow down.
It’s what’s on the inside that counts – save water by cutting the number of times you wash the car each month, and make sure to turn off the faucet between rinses.
Think twice before hopping in the car for a ride to the store. Do you really need that loaf of bread or bag of cookies today? Try shopping once every one or two weeks instead of making multiple trips for just a few items. Make an effort to shop at the grocery store that’s on the way to work instead of the one across town. Limiting the number of trips helps save gas AND money!

Be a GREEN KID!

Make sure to recycle the school papers you no longer need instead of throwing them in the trash. Ask your teacher if he or she can keep a recycle bin in the classroom – this way all the students can pitch in.

If you get a new toy that needs batteries ask your parents to use rechargeable batteries instead of disposable ones. If you use disposable batteries make sure to recycle them, since they can contaminate landfills once they start to corrode.
One of the easiest ways to save energy is to turn off the television or radio when you leave the room.
Try riding your bike or walking to a friend’s house rather than having someone drive you in the car. You’ll get exercise and save gas, which means less smog and cleaner air.
